Description
William Pitt Fessenden, godchild of Daniel Webster and schoolmate of Franklin Pierce, Nathanial Hawthorne, and the Longfellows at Bowdoin College, served with distinction as U.S. Senator from Maine from 1854 to 1869. An intrepid though sometimes reluctant political servant, he loomed especially large in the affairs of his state and the nation during the turbulent Civil War and the Reconstruction years.
